The Great British Bake Off is back for a brand-new series and one of the contenders this year is Dan from Cheshire.
Dan, 42, a resource planner in civil engineering, has over 300 cookery books, which should come in useful for inspiration for this year’s amateur baking battle which is now into its 14th series.
He will often find the hardest bake in one of his many cookbooks and start there, throwing everything he’s got at creating a masterpiece.
Dan, who is married with two young sons, fell in love with baking after time spent travelling in South America sixteen years ago. His particular loves are pies and puddings and he also has a penchant for patisserie.
Before he and his wife bought their first home, they lived with his in-laws. His mother-in-law taught him to make perfect shortcrust pastry, something which will come in handy during the show’s famous pastry week.
He has been described by the show’s producers as a perfectionist and won Star Baker in Week One after coming first in the Technical challenge and impressing with his Showstopper of a chocolate cake resembling his late dog Bruno.
Dan said: “To get Star Baker in Week One meant the world to me.”
When he’s not baking, he loves to play football with his two young sons, work out in the gym or forage for edible treats in the countryside around his home.
Each week the bakers on the Channel 4 show tackle a different baking skill, which become progressively more difficult as the competition progresses.
